Yes - any applications where parts with be exported overseas, should be protected in a Zerust VCI bag that is 4 mil or thicker. This is recommended as parts going overseas, especially by cargo ship, can be exposed to climates with heavy moisture and salt in the air for 30 to 45 days on average. The thicker bag will slow down the rate of water vapor that can transfer into the packaging environment to the point it won’t overpower the VCI and thus not harm your metal parts. Thinner bags can be used on applications where parts are being stored or shipped domestically only.

First of all, not all VCI chemistry is the same and certain VCI’s work better at protecting different kinds of metals. Secondly, Zerust is the pioneer of VCI bags and is the world’s largest manufacture of VCI films. Besides just making and selling a product, Zerust’ s technical staff and corrosion engineers also can perform several corrosion prevention services (usually at no additional charge) for companies using their products to help eliminate corrosion. Some of these services include onsite inspections, process audits, fluid testing, and corrosion testing of materials. There is a lot that goes into protecting metal parts from corrosion and using a VCI product is only part of the solution. Only a true corrosion prevention company like Zerust has the technical resources to work with manufactures to solve corrosion problems, where as a typical plastic bag manufacture can only sell a bag, with or without VCI in it, with little or no reassurance that the VCI will work properly.

Yes. Parts made from only ferrous metals (iron/steel) should be protected in a Zerust yellow ferrous VCI bag for optimum corrosion protection. Metal parts made with a combination of ferrous and non-ferrous metals (brass, copper, aluminum, etc.) should be placed in a Zerust green multimetal VCI bag, and non-ferrous only parts can be placed in either a green multimetal bag or a custom Zerust non-ferrous VCI bag. Custom colors and sizes are always available with a minimum order requirement.

What is the difference between using a VCI bag from Zerust vs. a so called VCI bag made a typical plastic bag manufacture?

Does it make a difference as to what kind of metal the parts are made from when using a Zerust VCI bag?

The Solution

The OEM contacted Zerust for a solution to their corrosion issues. Zerust performed a custom cleaning service and was able to remove the copper oxide formation without damaging the gold plating or the encased component. The cleaned sensors were packed in Zerust ICT520-CB1 Anti-Tarnish Film to prevent further copper oxidation.

When samples of these sensors were inspected before shipment, the sensors were found to have black copper oxidation on exposed areas of the gold plated contact leads.

Great information! It is a known fact that the automotive industry, our military, and the heavy equipment industry has been using Zerust VCI packaging products for years to protect metal from corrosion. VCI packaging is a preferred method of protecting parts during shipping and storage in these industries for it's effectiveness and ease of use. Plus, all Zerust VCI poly bags and films are 100% recyclable, and their kraft VCI paper is compostable, so these are also "Green" products as well.
